Understanding Bhojpuri Heritage: An Introductory Course
School of Mauritian and Area Studies
(Full-time)

Applications are invited from prospective candidates wishing to enrol on the Understanding Bhojpuri Heritage: An Introductory Course (Part Time) on offer at the Mahatma Gandhi Institute, Moka as from January 2026.

Bhojpuri heritage holds a significant place in contemporary society, both in India and among global diaspora communities. Encompassing language, music, dance, literature, and festivals, it serves as a vital link of identity and belonging for over 300 million native and diasporic speakers. The inclusion of Bhojpuri Geet Gawai on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity underscores the global importance of preserving and promoting Bhojpuri traditions that strengthen community bonds and ensure cultural continuity.

In Mauritius, the School of Mauritian and Area Studies, through its Department of Bhojpuri, Folklore and Oral Traditions, continues to lead efforts in promoting and disseminating Bhojpuri language and culture. In line with this mission, an online, assessment-based short course titled Understanding Bhojpuri Heritage is being launched to reach a global audience. This initiative supports the Mahatma Gandhi Institute’s broader vision of internationalising its educational offerings and engaging learners from India and Indian diasporic regions with significant populations of Indian ancestry.

The aim of the course is to:

deepen learners’ understanding of Bhojpuri heritage by exploring its linguistic foundations, cultural practices, literary expressions, and diasporic transformations.

  • develop skills in cultural reflection, heritage documentation, and community engagement.
