The short course in relief printing has been designed to introduce participants to the creative and technical foundations of relief printing through both paper and fabric applications. By combining technical instruction with creative inquiry, the course seeks to provide participants with transferable artistic skills applicable to fine art, textile design, craft practices, and creative entrepreneurship.
The course aims at providing learners with practical knowledge of carving, inking, composition and pattern development using relief surfaces such as linoleum and rubber blocks. Through guided studio practice, learners will be exposed to the preparation and handling of inks, the use of appropriate carving tools, and safe working methods within the printmaking environment. A key component of the course is the introduction to reduction printing techniques, where learners progressively carve and print from a single matrix to create layered colour compositions. Participants will experiment with minimum 2 colour-applications and explore how positive and negative space and registration contribute to the visual impact of a print. The course also extends relief printing into textile applications through block printing on fabric. Learners will explore the translation of motifs into repeat patterns suitable for decorative and functional surfaces. Emphasis will be placed on alignment, repetition, and the accurate registration of blocks to create cohesive designs. Through experimentation with colour combinations and pattern arrangements, participants will develop an appreciation for the relationship between printmaking, design, and surface ornamentation.
