The short courses in Pottery and Terracotta have been designed to introduce participants to the creative and technical foundations of ceramic practice through both functional and decorative applications. Terracotta is closely connected to pottery as it is one of the oldest and most widely used forms of earthenware clay, traditionally shaped and fired to create both functional vessels and decorative ceramic objects By combining technical instruction with creative exploration, the course seeks to provide participants with transferable artistic skills applicable to craft practices, design, sculpture, and creative entrepreneurship.
The course aims at providing learners with practical knowledge of local and imported clay preparation, hand-building techniques, surface treatment, and terracotta finishing processes. Through guided studio practice, learners will be exposed to the properties and handling of clay, the use of appropriate ceramic tools, and safe working methods within the pottery studio environment. A key component of the course is the introduction to traditional pottery and terracotta techniques, where learners progressively develop forms using methods such as pinching, coiling, slab construction, and basic moulding processes. Participants will experiment with shaping, texturing, carving, and decorative applications to create both functional and sculptural terracotta and ceramic pieces.
The course also extends into surface decoration and finishing techniques through the application of slips, oxides, and natural terracotta treatments. Learners will explore the translation of motifs and textures onto ceramic surfaces suitable for decorative and utilitarian objects. Emphasis will be placed on form, balance, craftsmanship, and the relationship between structure and surface treatment to create cohesive ceramic works. Through experimentation with textures, patterns, and firing outcomes, participants will develop an appreciation for the relationship between pottery, material culture, and contemporary craft practice.
